What is the community meal program?

The community meal program was conceived in 2009 to provide a weekly meal for people in need in our community. All meals are provided by various service clubs, corporate groups and faith groups in the Newmarket/ Aurora area. We typically serve between 60 and 90 guests.

When and where does the community meal take place?

Today at IFTC, the community meal operates 52 weeks a year, every Friday from 4:30 PM to 6:000 PM. Meals are served in the Community Hall all and offer a great chance for our guests to socialize. On a number of occasions our groups have included musicians who have entertained guests during the meal. In addition take-home meals are given for those who may be unable to come out for the meal.

Who is responsible for preparing the food for the community meal?

Each week a different group plans the menu, purchases the food, does the food preparation in the kitchen at IFTC and serves our guests.

2016 groups providing for the community meal

The program is also supported by a group of core volunteers from IFTC, who setup and cleanup after the guests leave.

An invitation to participate

All corporate, business, service or faith groups are invited to get involved. Most groups spend approximately $325 per meal. We also accept donations to this project and provide tax receipts as we have groups willing to prepare meals but are unable to absorb the cost.

We are now creating the schedule for 2016 so if you’d like to participate or get more information contact Marilyn Sorochan at 905-898-1274 or email: sorochan@rogers.com Our thanks to John Howard Society of York Region who annually have provided funds to support the community meal program.
